The Phi Hotel Canalgrande is a refined hotel in the center of Modena, the only 4-star hotel in the heart of the historic city center.
In a strategic position for business trips and leisure stays, the hotel represents a convenient and functional location for getting around the city and for the entire region: it is located about 1.5 km from the Modena railway station and 400 meters away. from Piazza Grande, it is a 6-minute walk from Modena Cathedral and 8 from Palazzo Ducale.
The hotel is located in the Limited Traffic Zone but is responsible for issuing parking authorizations for customers arriving with their own car. The customer communicates the vehicle registration number at the time of check-in to the hotel staff who will forward the communication to the competent office.
The hotel also offers its guests a private garage upon reservation. The Phi Hotel Canalgrande is a historic residence located in the ancient Schedoni palace, to the right of the Church of Santa Maria delle Asse, whose origins date back to 1530, when it was built to be used as a convent and then rebuilt, at the end of the 1700s on a project by Giuseppe Soli, for the singer Caterina Bonafini, whose cultural salon was one of the best attended in the city.
Subsequently the property passed to Dr. Filippo Spezzani, only to be sold, after his death, to the Marquis Giuseppe Pietro Schedoni. The mansion remained the property of the Schedoni family until the mid-1900s, when it was sold to a private individual who transformed it into a hotel.
Even with the necessary adjustments to fulfill its new duties as a stately hotel, the Palazzo still retains the sober architectural lines of the exterior. The windows of the first order have elegant jambs and rectilinear crowning that is also repeated on the top of the entrance door - a round arch - which is accessed via a marble staircase.
The windows on the second floor, also with a straight crown, have a balustrade with pillars at the base, a motif taken up on the sides of the building: on the left, as a connection with the Church of S. Maria delle Asse and on the right, as a balcony of a large terrace supported by large arches overlooking the courtyard to the south of the building.
The sobriety of the exterior is contrasted by the rich decoration of the interior: the entrance hall and the adjoining rooms have ornamental details of neoclassical inspiration which, in some rooms, are mixed with the illusionistic effects typical of the Rococo.
The themes of the pictorial decorations and the portraits aim at the exaltation of the arts combined with the celebration of the Este family and the French ruling house. The Phi Hotel Canalgrande counts among its guests illustrious personalities from the industrial, artistic, cultural and sporting world of international caliber.
